Pai-Yun Primary School was founded in 1946 on the boundary between Xizhi and Nankang districts. With a student body of 420 pupils, divided into 15 classes and one kindergarten, now an oasis of learning and community involvement, Pai-Yun serves as a uniform population of teachers, parents and staff members alike, who believe deeply in bilingual education.

We are at a crossroads

In today’s world, English is the current international language, far more dominant than it was 30 years ago.
Parents across the globe are demanding more and earlier English instruction for their children and many consider mastery of English to be fundamental for their child. Since more than half the world’s population is bi or trilingual, communication is the first step to appreciating and understanding other cultures.
Given that parent choice is a major component of our program, this critical concern marked the shift in the fortunes of Pai-Yun’s bilingual education.
The results of flagging support among its main constituents—parents and teachers—and a growing interest in the English education, has permitted us to give children the ability to communicate in more than one language and the opportunity for more diverse associations.
We are at a crossroads, we can either take the path of division along language lines or we can assert our need for a common language.
At Pai-Yun, we choose the latter.

Teachers plant the seed of learning

Our program avouch that all instructors take the time to impart a meticulous foundation of the English dialect to all their students, making sure that all the children are reading and learning at their competent level. By instilling confidence in all pupils, we distinctly urge each individual to assimilate knowledge at their own pace all the while paying special attention to those who might have more difficulty grasping the English language. Our English teachers often use various forms of communication to reach out to their students: they use drawings and act things out. They hug kids; they console them; they make sure that the children understand what is conveyed in class. Above all, our experience illustrates the near-miraculous speed with which children learn. Behind the erosion of support is a rising statistic: the children’s improvement, nurturing the seed of learning.

A reminder of what education is supposed to be

The important elements of the theory behind our program were provided by Wu Chan Chi, Pai -Yun’s Principal, who emphasizes on the paramountcy of a bilingual education on the students’ success.
But stresses that bilingualism is only part of what drives education at Pai-Yun. The broader vision is that of apprenticeship in the discipline of equity, anti-racism, and a multicultural education.
One might synthesize our school’s overall educational philosophy into a vision along the following lines:
We believe that in this increasingly global age, bilingualism is an estimable advantage.
All children should have the opportunity to learn to speak, read, and write in at least two languages. Additionally, our program is about more than learning a language. It is based on a deference and appreciation for diversity and multiculturalism.
While parents and community are essential cohorts on shedding light in this tutelage, it is our duty at Pai-Yun to ensure that all the adults of our future are performing at high academic levels because true education is a preparation for life in all its facets.
